Galaxia Welcomes Historic Federal Investment Advancing Canada’s Sovereign Space Launch Capability
Ottawa, ON – March 16, 2026 - Today, Galaxia joined industry leaders across Canada’s growing sovereign space ecosystem in Ottawa, to mark a historic milestone for Canada’s space sector as the Government of Canada announced major investments to advance the country’s sovereign space launch capabilities.
The Honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defence, announced a $200 million, 10-year investment to support the development of a Canadian-owned spaceport near Canso, Nova Scotia, alongside additional funding and initiatives to accelerate domestic launch capabilities through the IDEaS Launch the North program and Canada’s participation in NATO’s STARLIFT initiative.
The announcement represents a seismic step toward establishing a complete Canadian space launch cycle: Canadian satellites launched on Canadian rockets from a Canadian launch site. Achieving this capability will enable Canada to independently design, build, launch, and operate space systems critical for communications, earth observation, defence operations, and scientific missions.
Through the IDEaS Launch the North program, the Government of Canada also announced funding to support Canadian launch vehicle development. Galaxia congratulates the companies selected in this first round of funding, including NordSpace, Canada Rocket Company, and Reaction Dynamics.
These investments also mark an important moment for Nova Scotia’s growing role in the global space economy. With launch infrastructure being developed in the province, and companies like Galaxia advancing next-generation satellite technologies, Nova Scotia is emerging as a key hub for launch operations, advanced manufacturing, and high-value aerospace jobs while strengthening Canada’s domestic space ecosystem and creating new opportunities for Canadian suppliers and innovators.
“Today’s announcement represents a defining moment for Canada’s space industry and for Nova Scotia,” said Arad Gharagozli, CEO of Galaxia. “Canada is laying the foundation for a fully sovereign space capability. This is a major step for our sovereignty, our security, and our economy. Nova Scotia is emerging as a critical hub for this new era of space activity, and Galaxia is ready to contribute to building this capability here at home.”
Galaxia also recognizes the leadership of its partners Maritime Launch Services and Reaction Dynamics, whose work is helping advance Canada’s sovereign launch ambitions and strengthen the country’s position in the global space economy.
As global demand for launch services continues to grow, sovereign access to space will be essential to strengthening Canada’s national security, economic competitiveness, and technological leadership. Galaxia is ready to help drive this new era of Canadian space capability forward with next-generation satellites and mission infrastructure built in Canada
