Galaxia Awarded $2.5M Contract by Department of National Defence to Advance Canada’s Space Data Infrastructure
HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA – 09 September 2025 – Galaxia, Canada’s leader in intelligent satellite compute solutions, has been awarded a $2.5M project by Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) to design, build, launch, and operate the Canadian Tactical Operation Satellite (CTOS). This 33-month mission will be designed and manufactured in-house at Galaxia’s facilities in Nova Scotia and operated from Canada using Galaxia’s extended orbital gateways across Canada and around the world.
Delivered under Galaxia’s MissionOne turnkey solution, CTOS represents a historic milestone for Atlantic Canada, marking the first time a Canadian-ordered nanosatellite-class spacecraft is being built in the region. The mission underscores Canada’s commitment to sovereign, secure, and scalable space-based infrastructure to meet the growing demands of national security, Arctic operations, and advanced communications.
Building Canada’s Future in Space
CTOS will validate and advance next-generation data relay and edge-computing technologies that may inform future orbital data infrastructure. During its 12-month in-orbit campaign, the satellite will:
- Test and benchmark LEO data relay pipelines for secure, resilient communications.
- Demonstrate edge-computing capabilities that enable faster, in-orbit data processing and decision-making.
- Build a foundation for scalable hybrid networks that will enhance Canada’s competitiveness in the global space sector.
- Complete an R&D demonstration of how low-latency, high-bandwidth connectivity which could benefit remote communities and defence of the Arctic.
As part of Galaxia’s commitment to Canadian innovation, the company is exploring options to launch CTOS from Canadian soil, if a viable domestic launch provider is available during the mission timeline.
