Galaxia is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to support the development of software for embedded systems used in spaceflight and related mission-critical applications. This role will focus on low-level software development, real-time systems, communications interfaces, and integration between flight software, hardware, and higher-level application systems.
Department:
Software
Responsibilities

As an Embedded Software Engineer you will work with the electrical and software teams to support the development of software for use in space.

RTOS (FreeRTOS or similar)

  • Task scheduling, priorities, and preemption
  • Semaphores, mutexes, queues, and event groups
  • Stack sizing and overflow detection
  • Interrupt-safe API usage (ISR-safe function variants)

C Programming for Embedded Systems

  • Pointers, memory management, bitwise operations, structs/unions, volatile/const qualifiers
  • Writing interrupt service routines (ISRs)
  • Understanding of undefined behavior, compiler optimizations, and their effect on embedded code

Communication Protocols

  • I2C/SPI: master/slave configuration, timing, multi-device bus management
  • UART: baud rates, flow control, framing
  • Ethernet/TCP-IP stacks (e.g., lwIP) if networked embedded systems are involved

Reading Schematics/Datasheets

  • Understanding electrical schematics (pinouts, power rails, pull-up/pull-down resistors)
  • Interpreting register maps and peripheral documentation

Collaboration

  • Comfortable working alongside hardware/EE teams.
  • Able to reason through complex timing, communication, and integration issues.
  • Comfortable working with incomplete information and evolving requirements.
  • Willing to document decisions and communicate tradeoffs clearly.

‍

Requirements

What we look for:

  • Strong proficiency in C for embedded systems.
  • Experience developing software for microcontrollers or resource-constrained embedded platforms.
  • Familiarity with FreeRTOS or another real-time operating system.
  • Understanding of embedded communication protocols such as CAN, I2C, SPI, USB, UART, Ethernet or similar interfaces.
  • Experience debugging low-level software and hardware/software integration issues.
  • Ability to read schematics, datasheets, and technical interface documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on complex technical problems.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative engineering environment with hardware and software teams.

What sets you apart:

  • Experience with spacecraft, CubeSat, robotics, aerospace, defense, or other mission-critical embedded systems.
  • Experience with CubeSat Space Protocol.
  • Familiarity with bootloaders, firmware update mechanisms, or secure embedded communications.
  • Experience with Python or other scripting languages for testing, automation, or tooling.
  • Knowledge of embedded Linux or hybrid systems involving both microcontrollers and higher-level processors.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD workflows, static analysis tools, or automated embedded testing.
  • Familiarity with fault detection, recovery logic, watchdogs, and reliability-focused embedded design.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing.
